Spraying is a quick, easy and cost-effective way to install refractory materials in high-temperature processes. However, its downsides include the need for pre-heating and the dust it creates during the installation phase.

Generally, aluminium oxide or magnesium-based gunning materials – the characteristics of which can be altered through several different additional materials – as well as various gunning materials based on recycled materials are available. In our customer’s process, we use an aluminium oxide-based product to fix the brick linings of the ladles, for which we have already supplied virgin gunning material for a long time.

In this example case, we began to develop a gunning material based on recycled materials together with the customer, as the annual volume of the product was very high. The development work process was very fast – thanks to our long history with the virgin material. We aimed to retain the product’s characteristics, even though a large percentage of the core materials were switched out for recycled raw materials. The result was immediately the right kind of formula, as no inadequacies were found in the characteristics of the gunning materials or the durability of the ladles. In addition, the product’s distribution of grain sizes was better than before, which significantly decreased dusting and the ricocheting of particles. The gunning material immediately went on into a longer testing period, and, after that, directly into regular use.
