News

High-temperature processes generate significant volumes of spent refractory material. The good news? Most of it can be recycled — and reused.

At Betker, we are committed to reducing waste and environmental impact by supporting the circular use of refractory materials from the customer’s site back into production.

What materials can be recycled?

Almost all refractory materials can be recycled, provided they are clean enough. The most important criterion is purity: recycled materials should be free from slag, steel residues, or other contamination. If the material is sufficiently clean, it can be reused after being processed.

Betker helps customers evaluate their used materials and determine their recyclability. We also support our customers in setting up collection and sorting practices to ensure successful recycling.

How does the recycling process work?

Recycling refractory materials is a straightforward but carefully controlled process. With the right steps and support, used materials can be transformed into high-quality raw inputs for new products.

Here’s how the process typically goes:

  1. Unloading and collection

Refractory materials are removed from their original use at the customer’s site. Clean materials are collected separately.

  1. Sorting and screening

The materials are pre-cleaned and screened to remove unwanted materials.

  1. Crushing and drying

At Betker’s processing facility, the materials are crushed, dried, and reclassified into usable raw material fractions.

  1. Supply into production

These raw materials are used to produce new refractory products, either immediately or after temporary storage in silos.

Recycling in Betker’s product portfolio

Currently, around 25 % of Betker’s raw materials are recycled, and we offer over 20 products that include recycled content. These products are typically high-volume materials where the use of recycled input has been extensively tested and proven.

But we’re just getting started. Our product development continues to explore new ways to increase the share of recycled content while maintaining or improving performance.
