The Refractory Highlights conference, organised by Betker Oy and Krosaki Harima Europe, brought together Nordic experts in refractory materials for the fourth time. This year, the event took place in Sandviken, Sweden, with the theme “Greener metal making with refractories”. Among other topics, the conference covered the latest developments in the industry, the choices of refractory materials for low-carbon emission steel production and the recycling of refractory materials. The discussions included many different perspectives, from metal manufacturers to suppliers of refractory materials.

The event has grown in popularity year after year, and the trend continued this year as well with a record number of participants. The following factories and refractory material suppliers were represented: Alleima, ArcelorMittal, Betker Oy, Björneborg Steel, Boliden Harjavalta, EraSteel, German Refractory Association (DFFI), Krosaki Harima, Outokumpu Avesta, Outokumpu Tornio, Ovako Smedjebacken, SSAB Luleå, SSAB Oxelösund and SSAB Raahe.

The structure of the conference was a familiar one. The first day consisted of presentations from refractory material suppliers and metal manufacturers, as well as discussions on the themes. The day culminated in a joint dinner and networking opportunities. On the second day of the event, we visited the Alleima steel plant and the conference concluded with a joint lunch.

The feedback we received from the participants was very positive; everyone was very pleased with the event and it received special praise for its positive and open atmosphere. At the end of the conference, we were also able to conclude that all participants gained at least one new thing to bring into their daily work.
